The technology that I have selected to discuss is the design tool “Figma”. Figma is a web-based vector graphics editor and prototyping tool for user interface design. It has risen in popularity in the industry due to its versatility and ease of use and free price tag. I have chosen to use Figma because it is a powerful tool that can be used for a variety of design projects, including web and app design, as well as branding and illustration. Furthermore my past experience using the platform has positioned me well to be familiar with the software while also leaving area for improvement. These will be essential in designing the app’s UI and brand assets.

In order to create a professional-level project using Figma, there are several features of the technology that I need to master. These include:

  1. Vector networks: Vector networks allow for more complex shapes and paths to be created in Figma. I intend to master this feature by watching tutorial videos and practicing with different shapes and paths.
  2. Auto-layout: Auto-layout allows for more efficient and consistent design by automatically adjusting elements based on changes made to a layout. I will master this feature by reading Figma’s documentation and practicing with different layouts.
  3. Interactive components: Interactive components allow for creating prototypes with interactive elements. I will master this feature by watching tutorial videos and practicing creating different interactive components.

Figma is a social technology in several ways. Figma allows multiple users to collaborate in real-time, making it easier to work together on a project similar to Google’s creative suite. However despite this I will not be collaborating with other designers for this particular project. Second, it has a community aspect, with designers sharing their work on platforms like Dribbble. Finally, Figma also allows for commenting and feedback, making it easier to give and receive feedback on designs. Furthermore the Figma community is rapidly growing and it includes all of the free assets, mockups, and plugins available for my use.

Figma reflects cultural values in several ways. First, its emphasis on collaboration and community aligns with a growing trend towards collaboration and open-source development especially in today’s upcoming era of Web 3.0 standards. Second, its simplicity and ease of use reflect a desire for intuitive and user-friendly technology. Finally, Figma’s cloud-based design platform reflects a growing trend towards cloud-based software and data storage as highlighted in my other courses I have taken so far in the department (The Cloud is a Computer).

Figma will afford my actions in several ways when I’m using it for my project. Figma is a cloud-based platform that means that I can access my designs from anywhere, making it more convenient to work on the project. Finally, Figma’s inclusion of features such as vector networks and auto-layout, will allow me to create a professional-level design.

Figma will also constrain my actions in several ways. Its reliance on an internet connection means that I may not be able to work on the project if I don’t have internet access. Figma’s range of features may be overwhelming (as I am still unfamiliar with many of the more lucrative features), making it difficult to decide which features to prioritize for the project. Finally, Figma’s emphasis on vector graphics may make it difficult to create more complex designs that require raster graphics to combat this. I may have to use software from the Adobe Suite.
